Printing service is used by most organizations for varied purposes such as marketing and corporate communications. Hence, it is important to have some basic knowledge of how printing works, particularly offset printing, which is one of the most widely employed printing technologies.

Offset printing is so popular among printing service companies and customers because for large volumes, it is more economical than other options. That is why for bulk orders any good printing company would recommend you to go for offset printing.

The ink employed during offset printing has oil as the medium and does not dissolve in water. In offset printing, rubber blankets play a transitional role in copying the image on the paper, which is to begin with on the plate.

The first step is developing the images. When offset printing began, the images had to be developed by the use of film negatives and they were later put on aluminum plates. This is no longer required as the technology is available for making the plates in one go through an image setting system. After this, the plate is stuck to a cylinder with the correct side facing upwards. Water and ink, in that order, is spread on the image plates. The ink is spread over the image and to restrict it from spilling, a thin layer of water is spread over the remaining part of the plate.

The image is then transferred from the plates to the rubber blanket rolled on another cylinder, so that it is inverted. The image is reversed to its right side by transmitting the image to sheets which have been cut in line with the need and are placed on a different cylinder.

The job of printing is finished by the printing company by consolidating the printed sheets using staples or glue or in any other way as per the needs of the client.
