Your close friends weren't doing you a favor when they cheered you on as you squeezed a pimple in front of the mirror. Picking at pimples is one of the main causes of scarring. Many of us won't hesitate to put our nails to work and squeeze at that unsightly whitehead. Unfortunately, immense consequences can proceed such behavior. If you want to stay scar-free, the first rule to follow is to never pop pimples. What you accomplish by doing so is allowing the acne bacteria to further penetrate the pore, and possible make its way to nearby pores. Popping pimples is very counterproductive when you consider these facts. Regardless, most pimples re-emerge an hour or so later after having already popped them. The bottom-line is that you are wasting your time tampering with acne lesions.

All pimples are not equally capable of inflicting scarring. Those that give way quickly to tampering are less likely to scar over. Whiteheads and blackheads are the perfect example. Inflamed lesions, on the other hand, can create scarring alone and can tempt someone to pick at them. Since they don't burst, any tampering pushes the acne bacteria further downwards and leaves behind scars of varying severity. Cysts and other inflamed lesions should be left alone. They will go away with time. If not, you should consider visiting a dermatologist. For most of you, a stray cyst will go away if you continue your usual acne treatment.

If you've already treated your acne and have been left to deal with scars, you have several options. Laser acne treatments and skin peels are two popular choices. They can be expensive, so it is important to shop around and locate a quality doctor. These treatments can be somewhat painful as well, leaving your skin to peel. As your care provider will tell you, you will have to schedule your treatments to allow for healing out of the sun. More than one treatment is usually necessary.

In order to stay free of acne scars, you have to resist the temptation to pick at pimples. One pimple can only bother you for so long, scarring can plague you for a lifetime. The choice is yours.
